Oh yeah, immediately as I arrived in Paris I had a chocolat chaude and got a wisdom drop from the one and only Julien Masanes, understanding more about his work and the @internetarchiveeurope’s strategy 👀

Ahhhh, I could have hoped for nothing better than having lunch with #WSocial’s favourite bot 💕
Thank you @_elena 🌻

@tommi @giovannicerboni be safe <3

The term "single use software" currently lives rent free in my head.
People use LLMs to create software specific for their needs. But neither can other people use it (hardcoded variables, no rights management, too specific), nor do they use it again (too specific, easier to produce a new one).
Single use software is not maintained. Nobody understands it or has an interest in keeping it working.
The creation of single use software feels cheap, but isn't. It takes time to create the software, it needs infrastructure and power. The time is experienced as short compared to how long it takes to create maintainable and reusable software. But once you take into account how many people benefit from reusable software, the single use software takes way more time to create than what it saves. The infrastructure and power costs are hidden because the data center isn't visible. The costs are subsidized by venture capital.
Like other single use items, single use software brings risks of unforeseen consequences. From data loss or leaks to issues for maintainers of reusable software (eg. verbal abuse, less motivation and lost income).
As an example of single use software is a German LinkedIn post of a person who slopcoded a HEMS (home energy management system). It took them more than a week. While open source projects like https://evcc.io/ already provide the same functionality. They could have used it for free or paid 100€ and got support for some additional devices. But they decided that they know better how it should work and now have a single use software. If it breaks there is nobody they can ask. There won't be updates and no community to discuss and develop new features. No organization will ever be interested in officially supporting it. And even if it works, it only benefits that one person.
(This doesn't mean people shouldn't build things that only they use. But they should enjoy doing so.)
@luca let's build a skill that forks FOSS and sends meaningful upstream PRs
Digital puritanism: MP apparently and harmlessly uses glasses as teleprompter with no evidence he's recording (and what would it matter as the event is on video?) but that sparks calls for banning them. Get a grip.

@jeffjarvis the question would be whether anyone else would be using these glasses during other parliamentary duties, when things could be confidential. Reform hasn't exactly covered themselves in glory, they have been exposed in multiple stings.
Sorry, the function starts_with?/2 in module Elixir.String didn't receive the data it was expecting

@randahl Maybe this ⬆️ Q&A was the impetus for another post I saw on #SocialMedia. It was a quote often attributed to Ernest Hemingway: “It takes two years to learn to speak, and sixty to learn to keep quiet.” Well done President #Zelenskyy.
J'aurais tellement aimé pouvoir y aller !

@Alice Alice placing JELLOAF on a tee...
@MichaelTBacon @mekkaokereke I’m tempted to try using AI to setup some lists / construct an algorithm for me. I keep trying to think of things I might actually want AI to handle. Or would if it basically wasn’t just part of some great evil corporate travesty.
@rysiek @frelsisbaratta I understand your apprehension, but I don't see a practical alternative. 21st century state power is increasingly divorced from the wishes of those these entities supposedly represent. We will probably, in the longer term, lose the battle against such, and that will be to the detriment of our rights to communicate and organise. Especially so, amid a rising far-right in Europe and elsewhere, complete with proposals aimed at remigration + denationalisation - I'm scared.
Our powers been out since 6:30’ish this morning. I was outside with the dogs and a transformer next to our house sparked, caught fire, and blew out. Turns out a small branch fell on it, caught up in the wired, and bam!
@Gina Very kitcheny and wet-handsy day today…
